Mary Boswell Gordon was born March 4, 1797, in Lenoir, North Carolina, daughter of Charles Gordon and Mary Lenoir. Mary married John Dunlap in 1820 in Laurens County, South Carolina. Their children: Sarah Lenoir Dunlap m. Andrew P. Harris and stayed in Choctaw, MS William D. Dunlap m. Martha Ann Hayes and stayed in Choctaw, MS Mary A. Dunlap m. John T. Montgomery and moved to Texas Robert Charles Dunlap m. Margaret Hunter Black in Laurens, SC, and went to Texas Richard Simpson Dunlap married Sarah Ewell Black in Laurens, SC, and stayed there (my ancestors) James H. Dunlap never married and was in Laurens, SC, but died in War Between The States Sophie Caroline Dunlap m. Edward W. Faucette and lived in Lenoir, North Carolina It is said that when he was about 15 years old Richard Simpson Dunlap decided he wanted to attend college so he left Mississippi and rode alone on horseback back to South Carolina to attend Erskine College. He became a medical doctor and served in the War Between The States. Mary Boswell Gordon Dunlap married Gilbert Coffey after John Dunlap died in 1833. Census records show that both children of Mary and Gilbert were born in South Carolina. They moved to Mississippi between 1838 (when last child was born) and 1840 (census record). Mary was buried at Edgeworth Baptist Cemetery, Alva, Webster County, Mississippi, as "Mary B. wife of John Dunlap, born Wilkes County, NC" with birth and death dates on the tombstone. There is no mention of Gilbert Coffey on her tombstone. I have the feeling that her Dunlap children had her tombstone made. Notify Administrator about this message?
