Jack, How do you know that the Gilbert Coffey, son of Lewis, went to Mississippi? Do you have documentation? Interesting story! My father told me that it has been handed down that Gilbert Coffey was the "farm manager" for John and Mary Dunlap in Laurens County, SC. John Dunlap died in Laurens in 1833. Mary then married Gilbert Coffey and they went to Mississippi and had two children. I am actually descended from John Dunlap and Mary Boswell Gordon Dunlap Coffey but the Gilbert thing has always fascinated me. I know that Mary was living with Gilbert in 1850 census. In 1860, Mary is not living with Gilbert. In 1870 census she was living with her daughter and husband. I can't find Gilbert in the 1870 census. In 1880, Gilbert listed himself as a widower in the census records. However, Mary in 1880 census is living with her daughter. It is my conclusion that Gilbert and Mary separated and possibly divorced and Andrew P. and Sarah Lenoir Dunlap Harris buried Mary as a Dunlap. I have a copy of a picture of her tombstone. Mary's headstone make no reference to ever being a Coffey, but clearly names her as wife of John Dunlap of Laurens County. The fact that Gilbert would list himself as a widower and Sarah buried Mary as a Dunlap would indicate that the separation was not pleasant and the Dunlap's and Coffey's were no longer friendly with one another. Fascinating stuff! Bonner Notify Administrator about this message?
