Hello Jack,

I have just started my search on this side of my family, but I do believe that Shelby's parents were Jackson Coffey and Sarah C Unknown. They are living in Russell Co. in the 1850 Census in the 2nd district. Sorry I don't have the page number off hand but if you have access it is indexed under Jackson Coffey. If you don't I will send you a copy.

I could never find them in the 1860 census but I did in the 1870 census in Russell Co. indexed under Jackson Coppey. Jackson and Sarah are living alone. I found them again in the 1880 census living with in Russell Co. with Shelby and his daughter from his first marriage Mary S (Sarah) and his sister Jane Edmond or Edmonds and her 3 sons.

There is a man named Flanagan who has been researching the Hill, Coffey and Flanagan families and lives in Russell Co. KY. He has done a lot of research by the looks of it. He has Jackson and Sarah on his family tree with some of their children. I found him on both rootsweb or ancestry.

I have more info on Shelby and will be happy to share what I have found with you.

I was really having a time trying to find out if the 1900 census I have with him and a son named Shelby was the right person until I found that Melissa Absher in the 1900 Russell Co. census. She was single and living with her and Shelby's children all under the name of Absher. They must have married according to Mr. Flanagan in MO on their way to OK. I have found their child Elmers death certificate and it says mother Melissa Absher and father Shelby Coffey. I read somewhere that there were a lot of common law marriages back then.

I don't know how you are related to this line of the Coffey's but isn't it interesting that your name is Jack and the ancestor you were asking about was Jackson? MY e mail is Le5Thel@aol.com. Please feel free to e mail me and we can share.

Thelma
