See if you can follow my kind of logic. According to research done on internet, I believe William E. Coffey m. Sophia Warren of Camden Co. MO in 1847. They had a child in MO in 1848. The next time I find them is 1850 Collin Co. Census. Therefore I did a worldconnect search for Coffey/Coffee born in MO for 1845 plus minus 5 years. I saved those names. Then I did the same search for Collin Co. plus minus 10 years beginning 1860 as William E is found in Logan Co AR in 1870. I saved those names. Then I did a search for AR starting in 1870. I was hoping comparison of names would show overlaps. And it does.
I decided too that I needed Camden Co. marriage application for William E and Sophia Warren. I tried to go to the USGenWeb site and get the address, but for some reason all of the links show page not found. I will get mailing address through regular search engine.
Anyhow, I am finding my most likely connection to be in the Peter Coffee line. John E. Coffee m. Ann Penelope Bryan. According to Tony Flowers webpage (mail to him returns) a William Coffee is son of John E. and Ann Penelope.
What does the E. stand for in John E. and William E? In one search I thought I found a maiden name Edminson for a grandmother, but cannot find it again.
I am finding in Camden Co, Green Cemetery:
Alice wife of J.L. Coffey 1868-1944
George B. son of A.J> and L.J. 1892-93
Lillie Fay 1912
Louis J. 1860-1847, William N. 1861-1875
Also in this cemetery names I know associated with Coffey are also found: Green, Hart, Moulder, Storie
In Arkansas I have a Sarah Hart and Alfred Coffee associated with my Coffee family in 1880 Logan Co. Census.
I have so many loose Coffee's floating around now, with initials and no given names (that 1880 Census) I am trying to identify them all to determine their relationship to one another. I believe I have a few identified.
David Plunkett has a wonderful website and we made a connection via this 1880 Census. He shows two Coffee lines. One begins with Peter. Then he picked up Cam Coffee married to Pitts which is William E's grandson via William Tolliver Coffey. I think this line will eventually link back to Peter.
You have probably been at this longer than I have and might be able to give me some suggestions.
Anyhow here is the census I am working with:

Perhaps you can look this information over and see something I am missing.

I would appreciate anyone's assistance on this brickwall. I think it can definately be chipped away, I just seem to be hitting it with marshmellows.
