Audie,
I puzzled over the multiple fates of the multiple Larkin Coffeys. Here are my notes on the subject:

There is some confusion over Larkin Coffey's Civil War service. The only certain fact is that he enlisted in the Confederate army. Three Larkin Coffeys from Caldwell County volunteered for the Confederate Army.

Larkin #1 served as a private in Company A, 22nd Regiment North Carolina Troops. According to North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Vol. VII (1979), he "resided in Caldwell County where he enlisted at age 21, March 19, 1862. Wounded and captured in an unspecified battle (probably the second battle of Manassas, Virginia, August 29-30, 1862). Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, September 21, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captured at or near Jericho Mills, Virginia, May 23, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, May 30, 1864. Died at Point Lookout on August 4, 1864. Cause of death not reported." [p. 15]

Larkin #2 served as private in Company E, 58th Regiment North Carolina Troops. According to North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Vol. XIV (1998) he "resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Caldwell County at age 28 , July 5, 1862, for the war. Died at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, on an unspecified date (presumably in the autumn of 1862). Cause of death not reported. " [p. 328]. John O. Hawkins notes that this Larkin Coffey "died October 1862 of measles at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, while serving with his brother, Elbert in Company E, 58th Regiment, NC Troops, Confederate States Army." [Hawkins, A Nest of Robbins, n.d.].

Larkin #3 served as a private in Company F, 26th North Carolina Troops. According to North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Vol. VII (1979), he was "born in Caldwell County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Caldwell County at age 18, February 4, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until he deserted on June 19, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captured at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C., until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 27, 1863. Released on or about January 29, 1864, after taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the U.S. Army. Assigned to Company I, 1st Regiment. U.S. Volunteer Infantry."

The Elijah Coffey Bible Record (in my possession) gives Larkin's birth date as 7 June 1840. This accords with Larkin #1 whose age when he enlisted on March 19, 1862 was 21. However, the Bible Record gives his date of death as July 1863. This does not agree with the service records of any of the three candidates. However, in noting that the date is not specific, one might argue that the family was either misinformed or unaware of the true date and circumstances of Larkin #1's death at a Federal POW camp. Arguing against Larkin #2 is the curious fact that neither Elbert nor Elijah mentioned their brother in the daybook they kept throughout the war while serving together in Co. E, 58th Reg. N.C. Troops. (Daybook in my possession).
