James R. COFFEE was born about 1825 in Alabama. The 1850 census for Jackson County, Alabama shows him, his wife Nancy (SHIELDS) and a daughter, Jane, living at Coffee Town. In the 1850 census for Jackson County, Nancy is back in the household of her father, Jacob Edwards SHIELDS, along with Elizabeth J. COFFEE, b. abt. 1848, and Martha and Mary COFFEE, b. abt. 1851. Nancy SHIELDS later married Amos B. LAWRENCE in Fulton County, Illinois.
