David, I am finally back in town so maybe I can make better sense.
First, my best information says that the Jackson Co., AL, Coffey group come from Lewis Coffey and his son William. They were in Gwinnett Co., GA prior to 1853 and in Wilkes Co., NC prior to 1825.William married a sister to Winnifred Crumpton Coffey, wife of Jesse Coffey. The group went to Gwinnett together.Jesse S. Coffey and family ended up in Forsyth and then Pickens Co., GA.Some of the descendents of Lewis went to Jackson Co., AL and then to Texas.I believe the TN group also came from Wilkes Co., NC.Some of that group did go to Florence Co., AL (not many).
Now, I have nothing on a William Thomas Coffey. You did not mention the age or state of birth of your William Thomas Coffey so I will give you what I have on any Thomas.
-Thomas Walton Coffey, born about 1822 and my information says died by 1846.
-Thomas Jefferson Coffey, born about 1836 GA, married 1881 in Lawrence Co., AL.This Thomas was the son of Larkin D. Coffey.Larkin was a son of Jesse S. and Larkin died in Lawrence Co. in 1884 or 1887 and wa buried in Montgomery Cemetery, Lawrence Co., AL.Thomas married Rhonda Christian in 1881, Lawrence Co.
-Thomas Mattison Coffey born 1877 was the son of John Gordon Coffey who was a son of Jesse S. Coffey. My ancestor, James Elbert Coffey, was in Lawrence Co. and Thomas Mattison, his brother, did live with him for a couple years but this would have been after 1880.
Please let me know if this helps and also the date and state of birth for your James Thomas.
Jim
