I and my family are descendants of Lewis(Larkin)Coffey. He was the acknowledged son of Gen. John Coffey (Of the Battle of New Orleans) and a mulatto slave. Lewis was kept in Coffey's household as his personal manservant but my GRT2 grandfather-his son Alvin was sold and ended up initially as the property of Margaret Cook. We have a lot of information both on Coffey and his legitimate descendants but are searching for sources of slave records. Anyone with a clue as to where to look?? Alvin became famous in his own right as a California Goldminer in the 1849 gold rush and earned his freedom. His story has been featured in 2 TV events (one by Disney) and serveral articles. Alvin's mother Nellie Cook (Also acknowledged as a relation to Margaret Cook) is rumored to have escaped via the underground railroad to Canada. There is lot of history-too much to put on-line at this time. We hope eventually to locate not only the slave records but resting place of Larkin.
