Hi Elizabeth,

I was glad to find your request for information on your grandfather. Looks like we both have roots in the Cincinnati area. My dad's cousin Maurice Coe was CFO of Snyder Pipe Company in Cincinnati. My older bother Paul Coe graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary. One of my younger brothers David Coe majored in Architectural Engineering at Miami of Ohio.

Henry Augustine "Harry" Coe was born August 2, 1906, in Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI. His parents were John W. and Jane A. (Murray) Coe, who were married June 15, 1887, in Grand Rapids. Seems a little odd, but he was their only child, born after nineteen years of marriage. As you point out, both of his parents died before 1920, after which he lived in Grand Rapids with Eleanor Girodat, who took in several foster children. By the 1930s he was a schoolteacher in the Cincinnati area and married your grandmother Oct. 6, 1938, in Campbell County, KY. His wife Anna Marie Kroger was born Aug. 5, 1918, and died Nov. 28, 2005, in Cincinnati, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Kroger.

Harry Coe's father John Coe was born in 1859 in Delaware County, NY. By 1880 he had moved to Kent County, MI, where he worked as a laborer. His grandparents were Cyrus and Lucy Coe of Davenport, Delaware County, NY. I am not certain of his parents. He is listed in the 1860 census with eighteen-year-old Melissa Coe, who may have been a single mother or widow. The names of his parents should be listed on his death certificate.

Cyrus Coe was born in 1795 in Granville, Hampden County, MA, son of Gad and Huldah (Barnes) Coe. He was a fifteenth generation descendant of the English Knight Sir John Coe (1340-1415). Knighted by King Edward III in 1365 for uncommon valor at the Battle of San Gallo, Italy, May 1, 1364, he was a principal captain of The White Company, made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) in his novel of the same name. The family was brought to American shores in 1634 by Puritan immigrant Robert Coe (1596-1689), founder of Hempstead and Newtown, Long Island, NY, and the first person in New York records referred to as "Mr." because of is station. Among his more notable descendants are US President George W. Bush, UK Prime Minster Sir Winston Churchill and Country Music Legend David Allan Coe.

A couple of notes. Harry stated that his father's middle name was "Augustine" when he applied for a marriage license in Campbell County. You can get a copy of his license from Book 164, Page 183, at the courthouse. His father is listed as John W. Coe in census and other records. Additionally, his mother is listed as Jennie A. Murray on her marriage license in Kent County, MI. On other records she is listed as Jane. Harry listed his mother’s given name as Jane on his marriage license application.

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. For photos and bios of some of Harry Coe's relatives, please see: http://www.facebook.com/photo_search.php?oid=2214285914&view=all
