MIC, Below is the entry on Burrell Columbus Coe and his family from pages 1136-1137 of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002). Son Matchett Herring Coe was a world renowed sculptor and is listed in "Who's Who in America." 77. BURRELL COLUMBUS5 COE (Henry Isaac4 (29), Andrew Jackson3, Isaac2, Edward1) was born March 14, 1874, on a farm near Kountze, TX. Working for his father as a boy, he decided early that following the plow was not his life's calling. Later working for his Hooks uncles - who owned nearly everything in the county - he tended bar at a local saloon, clerked at the general store and was employed at a variety of jobs at the local Hooks Sawmill. A large framed, fine-looking redhead, he became a dedicated lumberman. Moving from one sawmill town to another, the first of his homes was at the sprawling town of Hooks Switch, haphazardly built up around the Hooks Brothers Lumber Company and the commissary, the exclusive dealer of everything from beans to bedsheets. The Coe family lived in a big white house, originally built for either their Hooks or Herring relatives. It was located in a clump of pines down a long drive lined with towering sycamores, some of which are still standing. From there they went to Kountze, then Loeb, then to Pitkin, LA, then to Groveton, TX. Moving to Beaumont, TX, in 1927, he was said to have been the best of Henry Coe's children. He died April 6, 1947, at his home at 1563 Grand Avenue, Beaumont. Burial was at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont. He married March 19, 1899, at Kountze, TX, Ida Forbes Herring, born September 23, 1880, in Chambers County, TX, died March 23, 1975, at Beaumont, TX, daughter of Matchett Clark and May (Whittington) Herring. Burial was at Magnolia Cemetery. iv. Matchett Herring, b. July 22, 1907, at Loeb, TX; d. Jan. 14, 1999, in Beaumont, TX. A US Navy combat veteran of WW II, he attended public schools and college in Louisiana and at South Park College (now Lamar University), TX, majoring in electrical engineering. During 1939-40 he studied sculpture under Carl Mines at Cranbrook Art Academy in Michigan, and has come to be recognized as one of the foremost sculptors in the United States. His endeavors have been limited mainly to commissioned works for permanent institutions, including the Battalion Memorial at Guadalcanal, the bronze Dick Dowling at Sabine Pass, TX, and the granite frieze on the cenotaph erected in memory of the children and teachers who perished in a school explosion at New London, TX, winners of national and state awards. He is also the creator of "The Texan" in Vicksburg National Military Park. Several Houston, TX, buildings are decorated with Coe sculptures, including Houston City Hall, Rice University Library, St. Mary's Seminary Chapel, St. Placidus Home for the Aged, First Presbyterian Church, the entrance to Hermann Park Zoo. Numerous other buildings, libraries, courthouses, offices, gardens and residences also boast of Coe works. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Texas and the nation, he was listed in the 1982/83 edition of Who's Who in America. In his own words, "My creative efforts have been expressions of theory about reality finite reaches into the realm of infinity." He made his home at 2554 Gladys Avenue, Beaumont, TX.
