Invitation to contribute to Timeline Cods in Ireland

In Reply to: Irish Cod Records & Timeline - PART ONE by Sherry Twamley of 431

Sherry Twamley posted information re Irish Cod Records & Timeline to Gen Forum 12 Feb 2012.

Establishing a timeline is a great idea Sherry.

In the information Sherry posted some Cod names are shown without dates, particularly items noted from Pipe Rolls of Cloyne, and numerous items do not have a reference, or proper citation. These are challenges we can take up.

Some details people will readily recognise or wish to follow up. I am hoping people will respond to the invitation to provide further information to this forum. Once sufficient suitable material accumulates in this forum I will compile it in a chronology and present it to this Forum as a draft Cod timeline for critical review and comments.

To have a worthwhile Cod timetime, we need names, and if possible a date or some base from which a rough date might be estimated, and ideally context. And sources.

Sherry has provided the lead with her notion of a Cod Timeline in Ireland. I'll be first cab off the rank to take up the challenge to extend and clarify a Timeline for Cods in Ireland

With respect to the Cods named in the Pipe Rolls of Cloyne, I guess a reason why Sherry did not supply dates is the difficulty in doing so, when many of the related items appear without a date.

I do not have a recent edition or translation of the source publication, which might or might not be more helpful than the transcription (in latin) I used. If using electronic editions, not all of these are digitally searchable - but the page numbers and names from the Index, which Sherry has given will assist.

First I will comment on the dating of Cods in the Pipe Rolls of Cloyne:

With respect to the Pipe Rolls of Cloyne the original roll from which the material was compiled is on ten membranes sewn together, written on both sides; the copy on one. This roll is said by Ware to have been begun in the year 1364 in the time of John Swafham, a Carmelite Friar and Doctor of Divinity, who was then Bishop of Cloyne, and this is supported by dating and details of the entries in the first parts. However using a date from 1364 cannot be used as the ultimate guide for dating, because after a while many documents, much older than the period of that Bishop, were included. Therefore, while Cods named in the early parts of the rolls seem to relate to a period roughly 1364 to 1368, or from 1364 to the last half of the 14th century, all dates would be best confirmed against other sources, if possible.

My reference: Richardi Caulfield,1869 Rotulus Pipae Clonensis: Ex Originali in Registro Ecclesiae Catedralis Clonensis, Kessinger Publishing.

To get better dating for Cods in records, and to imporve our knowledge of these historical people, should you recognise names in Sherry's post re Irish Cods in records and Timeline, please consider sharing what you know with this forum.

I hope this is helpful. Please consider taking up the invitation to contribute to a Timeline for Cods / Codds in Ireland
