Both Coddstown/Coddstowne, Wexford; Cottstown, Cork are both well-documented, Irish Cod/Codd family locations.During the 1200s-1300s, many of the Irish Cods of Cloyne, Cork and Ross diocese lived in Midleton/Middleton, including the area near Ballyfin/Ballyspillane in Barrymore Parish (Barrymore was the family stronghold of the Barrys/Barris.Cods/Codds were intimately involved with the Barrys from the time of the Invasion, documented by land records/fees in Cork, Cloyne and Ross/Wexford.)
Cottstown, Cork - Medieval records authenticate Coddstown, in the barony of Barrymore, and county of Cork (Cottstown is the Danish spelling of Coddstown) as named after the Cods of Cork.Cott is still a surname in Co. Cork. There is Cottstown near Ballyspillane. Cottstown near Ballyspillane, north of Midleton, south of Cloyne, near Ballyfin, Leighlin, Queen’s. Ballyell, Kilscoran Parish, Barony of forth, Wexford, Coddstown/Coddstowne was the ancient home of John Codd, who held it by knight's fee.The adjoining townland still known as Codd's Ballyell:
1324 - William Codde/Cadde of Balyell/Ballyell, co. Wexford [Ballyell, Kilscoran Parish, Barony of forth, Wexford], held of the heir of the Earl of Pembroke, then in the King’s wardship, 40 acres leaving an heir a minor, was committed to James Freynshe (French).The next record of the Codds in Ballyell is in 1387, when the custody of 40 acres of land in Balyell, co.1624 – David Cod of Ballydungan [Balledongan], brother of John Cod who held fee to neighboring Ballyell [and his brother John Codd held also in fee the adjoining townland still known as Codd's Ballyell], will to his wife, Ellen Cossen and his six children:John, Philip, Robert, James, Jowan (Joan), and Ellen Cod.
