Susanna, wife of John Cockrum, who went from Todd Co, KY to Gallatin Co, IL, and whose descendents lived in Franklin and Jefferson Counties, IL is Susanna Ray, dtr. of Zachariah Ray and Mary (Benge)Ray of Garrard Co, KY. Her maiden name, therefore is not Calloway.

I had assumed the Ray connection for the last 10 years or so, as John and Susanna's oldest children were born in KY btwn 1797- on. Back then, I found a marriage in Garrard Co, KY of John Cockrum and Susanna Ray, 28 Dec 1797, Zachariah Ray, providing the Bond. This record is also recorded as John "Cockranham". The scanned image is now online at the Garrard Co, website. It shows Cockranham crossed out and "Cockrum" written above it. In any case, John Cockram was listed in Garrard Co in the 1800 reconstructed census.

John is next listed in the 1810 Christian Co, KY census, and lived in what would become set off as Todd Co. In the 1820 Todd Co KY census, John and his son Thomas are listed next to each other and are styled Cockrim/Cockrill in the record. I checked the surrounding names and this is definitely the Cockrums of 1810.

In 1819, Christian Co, KY, Thomas Cockram (son of John) married Catherine McKinney/McCarmac/McMurray-Huston [in 3 different published lists, there are 3 different last names for Catherine!]. The bond was provided by Stanton Fitzjerrel.

I left these as tentative connections for John and son Thomas for over a decade. This week, I began digging around on Zachariah Ray, and discovered that his daughter Elizabeth Ray married James Fitzgerrel, brother to Stanton Fitzgerrel, who provided the marriage bond in KY in 1819.

James and Elizabeth lived in Posey Co, IN , just across the river from Gallatin Co,IL. Some of their children moved to Jefferson Co, IL.

As a final confirmation for me, John and Susanna Cockrum's daughter Betsey married Nathaniel Wyatt in KY and their oldest son was named Zachariah Rea Wyatt! They were in Jefferson Co IL as well.

John and Susanna Cockram appear in the 1830 Gallatin IL census and, I suspect that the Susanna Cockram in 1830 Jefferson IL census is also the same person. If so, then John died in 1830 and Susanna moved from Gallatin to Jefferson Co in the same year and appeared in both census records.

In looking at the census records, John was born btwn 1766-1770. I am guessing about 1769.

Susanna would have to have been born btwn 1771-1780. If the Jeff Co rec in 1830 is her, then she would have been born about 1780.

Given this information, Mathew Wesley Cockrum wasn't born in Dec 1797, unless this was a forced marriage. I suspect he was born in 1798 instead; or (as some census records have him born in 1795) was born of an earlier wife, which is possible, but I have no evidence for this.

I plan to view Thomas and Catherine's marriage record soon, in order to attempt the right maiden name.

Also, the Ray and Benge families are interesting and I am still compiling information researched by others about their lineages.
