From the way everything reads, yes, Ira Wilbur appeard to be abusive, and his wife sought shelter in Ellen's home. Blaming Ellen, Ira killed her. Mae just happened to be in the wrong place at the very wrong time. Just don't see how you can be temporarily insane, when you are lying in the woods, waiting on someone to come by so you can kill them. Sounds way too premeditated for me!
However the way the background reads in this story, Rebecca makes a clear point as to why that verdict probably came about. Ellen's husband left her prior to her daughter's birth, leaving her to fend for herself as a single mom at that early time. OK, so she DID! Did a pretty good job of it too, the way the story goes. She appeared as a very strong woman, which wasn't quite accepted back then.
Rebecca speaks briefly of Briant in this manuscript. He & Morgan patented lands near the present community of Lone Rock. The "legals" can be obtained at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
Yes, I'd like myself to learn more about the Civil War dealings in the area at the time, sounds interesting!
