didn't know he died in prison. do you know why? have also been looking for his parents. a distant cousin "( Decendant of Vol
Hancock who married one of Granddaddy's aunts)" sent me this:
"To make a long story short,  we found out that John sold some land that came from the Benjamin Cockrum headright.  Then we found where
Benjamin obtained land grants in TX, but he was listed as Cochran.  I got the various papers concerning that from the TX Land Ofc and found out that he arrived in
TX in 1834.  Then I found him and his family in some documents pertaining to that time in TX.  The name was spelled COCKRUM in those documents."
"The land that John sold was on the county line of Freestone and Navarro Counties.{tx}  The other land that his father had was in Robertson Co." {tx}
"As of Jan 20, 1835:
Benjamin Cockrum, 30, Alabama
Laura, 26
John T., 8
Eliza, 6
Margaret C., 4
Mary Ann, 2
Benjamin died between 1835 and March 1838.  Robertson Co is where we'll probably find some more info." info courtesy of kay popp
