John. I have seen un-sourced on-line material that connects the Nash County, NC Cockrells to the earlier settlement of Cockrells in Northumberland County, VA. Cockrell families are still on the tax rolls in that area of VA in 1782. Since you still live in the Nash County, NC area, you could help me answer a question through local records. By using the property tax rolls as a guide, can you tell when the Cockrell family started to settle in and own property in Nash County, NC? Nash was formed from Edgecombe in 1777 and it in turn was formed from Bertie in 1741, which was formed in 1722, from Chowan and Bath counties. Depending on when the Cockrells arrived, they might be in any of those 5 county's property tax records. In an unusual twist, my ancestor Phanuel Davis, born 1785, possibly in Wythe County, VA, appears to have a Cockrell Y Chromosome and matches at all 37 markers to other Cockrells. Am glad to trade help on this if you are willing. Mike Clark
