Hi there, Mark! Please tell me more about the genealogy you inherited - i.e., was it handwritten or is it something that was published? Do you know who wrote it? If it's in print, who was the publisher? There were some old COCKRELL family genealogies done around the turn of the last century, which modern family researchers found to have glaring inaccuracies. Here is a link to what is the most accurate family tree I've thus far come across online: Jim Burgess: COCKRELL Family Tree http://gedcom.surnames.com/burgess_jim/np277.htm THAT takes care of the COCKRELLs back to Colonial times; many times I read online that the Original COCKRELL Immigrant arrived here from Wales, but occasionally, it is claimed he came from Britain. However, in either case, there does not seem to be written documentary evidence, so until that can be proven, it's all just family legend. I only came across any info about any of this a few months ago, so you are lightyears ahead of me, I assure you. When I started researching J.Vard and Jane and her parents Elmore & Elender, I simply left all the DOUGLASS stuff for later, as I read that it was such a well researched family -- something I've recently learned is not accurate. Anyway, your ggg grandmother was born in Wayne County, Kentucky - although one census claims her state of birth was TN and one of her obituaries claimed she was born in Missouri. Maranda Jane DOUGLASS was the daughter of Elmore and Elender Cocke DOUGLASS. Presumably Elender Cocke was the eldest daughter of Jester Gwinn COCKE, Sr., and the sister of Jester Gwinn COCKE, Jr. There are approximately FIVE different individuals, all of them named Jester COCKE or COX or KOCK or COCK or COCHES or COXE or COCKS - from whence they came, apparently is anybody's guess. Elender's mother is unknown. There are very few mentions of Elender anywhere online, but she's usually referred to as Eleanor. The COCKEs from whom you descend first show up in Virginia, then they move to Kentucky, and then some go on to Arkansas and some to Missouri. The husband of Elender COCKE is Elmore DOUGLASS, Junior -- he is the son of Elmore DOUGLSS, Senior who is the son of Edward DOUGLASS. There are different versions of where Edward came from, and I don't know if any are accurate; however, I do know that people who were able to prove descendancy were accepted by the DAR. Edward DOUGLASS and his son Elmore (senior) are among the original settlers of Tennessee. Your Elmore is NOT to be confused with the physician of the same name from Gallatin, TN. Evidentally Sarah GEORGE is the wife of Edward DOUGLASS, but which GEORGE family she is from has not been proven. Evidentally, there is also controversy about the mother of Elmore DOUGLASS, but apparently she is Elizabeth Blakemore, and as a young girl, I've read that she loaded guns for the men who were fighting off Indians at Fort Blakemore. I have no idea if that's accurate, or myth. I started a messagethread in the DOUGLASS family forum, hoping that other great and gg and ggg grandchilden of Elmore & Elender DOUGLASS might have information about Eleanor's parents, but thus far, nothing. http://genforum.genealogy.com/douglass/messages/2006.html Here are the two places where Elmore and Ellender are mentioned online: Elmore Douglass, Jr. b: March 04, 1798 Sumner Co., Tennessee d: Aft. 1846 MO?? ................ +Eleanor Cocke b: Abt. 1800 http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/tnsumner/2000-02/0949950304 Eleanor Cocke b. 16 Sep 1803 m. Elmore James Douglas, 8 Jul 1820 http://home.southwind.net/~crowther/Cocke/CockeJester.htm This last URL leads to Phil Crowther's website, and he's been researching Charles COCKE and the five Jester Cockes for some long time. It's a very interesting website. Sorry this posting is so long, take care - will 'talk' to you, later! Notify Administrator about this message?
