Since the death of Zan COCKRELL occurred so recently, circa 1929, as opposed to Colonial or pre-Colonial times, one would presume that there must be records in print somewhere about it. Only caveat here, is that if the sheriff declared it a suicide, then indeed, maybe nobody ever spoke or wrote of it.
It's hard for me to believe that there aren't newspaper articles somewhere, because Zan's own family obviously disagreed with the sheriff's assessment and believed firmly that he'd been murdered.
Were I you, I'd definitely track down the names of ALL of Zan's sisters and find out their married surnames, and do abit of research -- maybe one of those families would have some newspaper clippings about their mom's brother, their uncle.
And then, too, every single one of Zan's children must be indentified, and then their children --- so that you can post your query about Alexander COCKRELL - AKA: Zan COCKRELL in other Surname Genforums.
Surely among all his descendants must be someone who is an avid Family Historian, or someone who has an old scrapbook somewhere, or a shoebox of family memorabilia in the attic.
Where did Zan's family settle in Texas?
Have you written to all of the Oklahoma historical societies and genealogical museums, etc.? Have you found out which libraries in Oklahoma have ALL the local newspapers on microfilm - going back at least into the 1920s? How about church records?
I did a brief search about Zan Alexander Cockrell Drumwright Oklahoma over at http://books.google.com -- but didn't find anything for 'your' Alexander - there are lots of Alexander COCKRELLs.
However, they keep scanning books ALL the time, so I suggest you to do a search over there several times a year, to see if anything shows up. Ditto on any newspaper archives. Have you searched the New York Times archives, just in case?
Have you gone to http://www.usgenweb.com and done searches on all the counties surrounding Zan COCKRELL's farms -- and to request that people do free lookups -- there may be obituaries in tiny local newspapers which the local volunteers have access to, and which may not come online for many years, if ever.

ALSO, there is a COCKRELL family genealogy forum over at http://groups.yahoo.com -- but I know nothing about it, all the messages are restricted to members, only, so I'm not interested. Years ago there was alot of activity about COCKRELL ancestry, but all that activity seemed to stop right around the time of Bella Hughes death.

Danny, once you have found the names of ALL of Zan's brothers & sisters and their children, as well as all of Zan's own children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc - I suggest that you carefully post ALL of them to this messagethread, so that if any of your relatives and 4th and 5th cousins ever happen to get interested in genealogy, they should be able to quickly find your posting at Google.
