Hi Betty, I am assuming you mean that Moses Sr. was born around 1737 instead of 1837. :) If you are like me you get excited and then your fingers don't always cooperate. Anyway, I am referring to the Moses Sr.as being the parent of my William b.1769, he fits perfectly into the time frame and is one of the very rare families that he could possibly fit into.
I had gotten some info from a Frank Cockerham, that seems to think this might be a match and gave me the following info to sleep on.
Tax lists of Surry County show the coexistence of William Cockerham of Little Reed Creek and the William Cockerham of Little Fisher River. They cannot be one person.
I think the combination of Nathaniel Stuart being from Little Fisher River, and a William Cockerham being from Little Fisher River, leads you to the best conclusion you are likely to find. I believe that Moses Cockerham of
Little Fisher River had a son William, born about 1769, who moved away or died in about 1799. He is worthy of further consideration.
I wish I knew more, but all I learned of William Cockerham of Surry County NC came from county tax lists found in NC State Archives in Raleigh.
the year he appeared on the tax list as a tithable suggests his birth in 1769. Subsequent appearances in tax lists in tandem with Moses suggests a son/father relationship.
Your William Cockerham/Cochram lived longer than the William Cockerham of Little Reed Creek in Surry; he died in about 1816 since the next year his land tax applied to Barsheba Cockerham. Also, his son William Junior was
born in 1777, hence he was older than your William.
I can't think of other William Cockerhams to equate to yours.
I guess this is pretty much all I've got to go on and so far its my best lead. The disappearance in 1799 is the other trigger for me, since my William may have gone with the Stewarts or followed or something to SC. Then all of a sudden he shows up around 1810 in Buncombe Co., NC, along with some Stewarts and I believe his 2nd wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Stewart.
If anyone has anything they want to add, I'm more than happy to hear it because this is all the leads I've had in a few years.
