Hi Larry,
Here's some tidbits about Stamper line.To date, there appears to be only one Stamper line. I love it when this happens.
Here's what I show:
John Stamper b 1647 England, died Middlesex Co VA.
two marriages: One to Dorcus unk.(son Jonathan)
2.mSusan Elizabeth Powell on June 5 1684, Christ Parish Middlesex Co VA.
son Powell "Virginia" Stamper M Mary Brookes on Apr 10 1705 Middlesex Co VA.
(Note here) My Wilburn ancestors were living in Middlesex Co Va c 1700.I think it likely that there are some connections to Stampers and Wilburns that remain hidden.at least from me, at this time.
I suspect, but can't prove that Susan Powell was a descendant of Thomas Powell, a cook who set sail on the 'Sea-Venture' only to be ship wrecked and stranded on Bermunda, along with over a hundred other passengers and crew. While on Bermunda 1609) he married Mary Persons. (a servant).Marriage performed by Rev Richard Bucks. The plight of the 'Sea-Venture' aka 'Sea-Adventure' is fascinating. There has been an on-going dispute among Welborn/Wilburn researchers as to the validity of a John Welsbourne also being a passenger on this ship wrecked vessel.(Passengers and crew reached Jamestown on May 21, 1610.)Only a partial lists of passengers survive today.Hence the dispute. I'm one Wilburn researcher who believes it likely that John Welsbourne was one of the ship wrecked passengers.
And while I'm putting forth some (unproven) opinions, I also think it is likely that Ambrose Powell, explorer whose adventures resulted in Powell Valley being named in his honor, was also related to Powell 'Virginia' Stamper.
Let me try to sum up here:
My Wilburn ancestors can be (proven) to have lived in the following places.
Middlesex Co VA c 1700.Richard Wilburn b c 1700 lived inMiddlesex Co VA to Lousia Co VA to Goochland, VA where he died in 1756.(I believe it likely that he was a descendant of Richard Wilburn who lived in York Co Va and was deliquent on his taxes in 1654.
Richard Wilburn was m to Ann Whitlock. One of his son, also named Richard was married at least three times. One of his wives was a Hughes.(probable descendant of Trader Hughes m to sister of Pocahontas.)
Richard (Jr) lived in the following places: He was probably born in Middlesex Co VA, lived in Lousia co VA, Goochland, VA, Orange Co NC and back to VA, to Amherst Co.His son Lewis b c 1765 was b VA (probable Amherst co).Lewis lived in Wilkes, Co NC in 1800.Some of his kin lived in Ashe Co NC.By 1819, Lewis was living with his family in Claiborne Co TN. (BTW, a Lewis Welbornwas charged with murdering a man from Wilkes Co NCin Dec 1827). He was arrested by Sheriff Shackleford of Claiborne co TN. Wish that I could learn more about this little incident.
Anyhow, all of these familes have tie in with some of your ancestors.Has to be the case.
Thanks again, Larry.Always a pleasure to hear from you.
