Sonya, thanks very much for your interest. My ancestors are long gone from the area aside from the fact that several of them are buried there in unlocated graves. My last direct link, James Patterson Cockerham and Amelia Darnell lived near Benham just northwest of Elkin. The moved to Ashe County for twenty years between 1870 and 1890 and came back to Wilkes County. He and Amelia left with their family for Iowa in 1905. His parents were James Cockerham and Rhoda McCann who lived just north of the present-day Cockerham Road. James Cockerham 1805-1861. Cockerham Road is a few miles west of Elkin just west of the intersection of Greenhorn Road and Austin Little Mtn. Road and is a "connector" between the two in the northwest quadrant of the intersection. This land would likely have belonged to Moses Humphrey Cockerham in 1836. Moses and James were sons of Elder Humphrey Cockerham 1745-1835 who had about fifty different land transactions recorded in early Wilkes Co. and lived also in the vicinity, but in his case likely to the south on Bugaboo Creek closer the Yadkin River. I would like to learn your impressions of the neighborhood if you happen to visit there. I grew up in Ashe County about thirty miles northwest of there and was not really familiar with the area. As you'll discover, it you aren't already aware, this place is not on the beaten path!
