Sharon:

Thanks for the clarification that you provided regarding "possible errors" in my research. Now that I understand that the "possible errors" that you refer to are the names and dates of the wives, I can address your concerns.

First, you seem to have confused two people, Steven Wacker and Steven Day. Your posting indicating "possible errors" is attached to Steven Wacker's posting (GenForum posting #886). Steven Wacker is the person who indicated that Richard Cocke II married Mary Aston. (I agree with you that this is an error.)

My name is Steven Day and I am the author of the article in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy on the origins of Richard Cocke in Pickthorn, England. It is my research on Richard's origins that you have listed in your posting. (You evidently saw my posting #912 on GenForum.) You say that you assume that the errors about wives of Richard Cocke I and II (reference to Mary Aston) appear in my articles. However, none of my several articles or family tree indicates anything about the wife or wives of Richard Cocke II. I do agree with your posting that Mary Aston was the second wife of Richard Cocke, Sr. (The information about Mary Aston is not from my research. However, Richard's last will and testament does name his second wife, Mary.)

Unfortunately, your confusion of Steven Wacker's posting with my posting (Steven Day) led you to indicate "possible errors" with my information on the origins of Richard Cocke in Pickthorn, England. I am pleased that you did not find these errors about the wives in my article or in my other work.

Second, you say that you assume that my data posted on my web site is the same as in my article that appeared in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy. It is not. I signed an agreement with the publisher that I would not post the article for one year. The article in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy does not mention the wives of Richard Cocke of Virginia or the wives of any of his sons. The article deals strictly with the origins of Richard Cocke in Pickthorn, England.

I believe that when you read my article you will be pleased. My article begins by reviewing the past research on the origins of Richard Cocke. Numerous new documents are described that show where these previous researchers made errors. (Previous researchers made guesses to fill in gaps in their documents.) My article also reviews all the people in the Stottesdon area named Richard Cocke and shows that one (and only one) of these is the Richard Cocke who later lived in Henrico, Virginia.

For those who read my article, you will find that this research went to great lengths to assure that there were no "guesses" to determine the origins of Richard Cocke of Virginia. My research took over a year and discovered documents for more that 100 births, marriages, deaths, and last wills and testaments. I also found records on church tithes and some great legal depositions.

My article can be found in many libraries (Seattle Public Library has a copy). Ask for the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, August 2007 issue, Vol. 45, No. 3. A copy of he magazine can also be ordered from the Virginia Genealogical Society (mail@vgs.org) for $5 plus postage.

The great news is that (for FREE) everyone can see the family tree for Richard Cocke showing about 50 new family members from Stottesdon, England at my web site. My web site also includes the story of Richard's family starting in England in 1582 with Richard's grandfather, William. The story also includes an incredibly detailed view of a Christmas day in 1596 when Richard's grandmother, Elizabeth, was deathly ill. None of this information appears in my recent article in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy.

My web site is at:

Thanks again, Sharon, for clarifying that your references to "possible errors" did not refer to my article or other work.

Steve Day
