Accoring to my papers...There was Walter Cocke, Thomas Cocke SR, Lemuel Cocke, Henry Cocke SR....whose sons were:
Henry Cocke JR,(my line) and David Clinton Cocke..(is this your line?)..and three other children...Whenever the name change took place?...I'm assuming that you were originally Cockes...and for research purposes..you should be seeking the "Cocke" spelling of the name...I have this line from Walter and all the names were spelled Cocke..so this was probably the one family...and from there on you might look for "Cox". Even on the wills that I have seen, the names were all spelled Cocke...There were no sons in my immediated family...but our names were spelled "Cox" on all of our school records, and marriage...etc., any legal
documents.. Both of my parents death records have "COX" so, you can imagine the confusinon for our family in doing future reseach. Even though, I was born with the spelling of Cocke...My father had several brothers and to my knowledge they all spelled their name "COX", and their children... but, they all descended from the Cocke lineage... Thanks for the reply... I do not know why each family changed their name but, in our case it was the pronunciation...of our name that caused the problem...My older sister was tased and taunted when she started to school...and according to my mother..it was intolerable...so the name change... butterflywings@bellsouth.net
