Cocke Family Genealogy Forum

I've been trying to trace the migration of John Cocke, the son of Walter Cocke. Did John also have a son named John? I have been searching in the Moore and Cumberland County areas of North Carolina where a John Cocke was an attorney in 1786. I believe he is the same man that was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons along with George Glascock. He and the rest of his family had their names spelled in various ways which seems curious to me. They hold consistant addresses yet their name shifts from Cock, to Cocke, then Cocks to Coxe, and finally Cox. In 1790 there was a Henry, John, George, Edward, and a William all living very close to each other. Many of the other families in this particular region known as Deep River, had Surry and Prince George County, Virginia origins as well as the Southside area of Virginia origins. I still only have a hunch about this particular John Cocke mentioned, but this forum is the most encouraging one yet! I had not thought to check the variant spellings of Cox until I met a Welshman who claimed that "Cox" was not the original spelling of the name. Who knew? Anyway, thank you for the work you are doing researching this subject. Sincerely
Clinton McKay Cox
