Hello Julie, I think you have stumbled into one of the more obscure "traditional" land rental agreements from England. Rent on land was due and payable to the lord on Christmas Day. Rents could be "real" as in a percentage of the value earned by the land, or "symbolic" as in one peck of apples, or "one ear of corn". It is apparent I think, that Capt. Thomas Cocke, did not wish to make a great deal of money from the land being leased. He would however retain ownership and title tothe land untill such time as the leasor could affort to buy the land outright. It is also possable that the person leaseing the use of the land was in some fashion related to Capt.
