I don't know exact details of your James Hartwell Cocke, but the middle name Hartwell indicates that he is a descendant of 12 Richard Cocke the elder, b. 1639, 2nd son of 1 Richard Cocke the immigrant. This branch of the family inherited old Bremo in Henrico County, VA and later John Hartwell Cocke built new Bremo in Fluvanna County, VA. Information on this line is in Vol. 1 of Cockes and Cousins. It's out of print, but I am told that the LDS library has it on microfilm.
