Hi Chuck,

There are only two primary sources showing information on George Cockburn's birth date and place of birth. They show he was born circa 1746 in England.

1) The Last Will and Testament of George Cockburn, Franklin County, Georgia, written 4 Sep 1834, in which George wrote that he was eighty-eight years old. If you do the math, he could have been born anywhere from Sep 1745 to Sep 1746.

2) The 1880 U.S. Federal Census for J. [Jeremiah] Cockburn [son of George Cockburn] in Precinct 2, Parker County, Texas, states that the place of birth of his father was "Eng" [England].

Others think our George Cockburn came from Scotland, but you don't do genealogy from the past forward. There were many George Cockburns born around 1745 and 1746 in England and Scotland, and there is no proof (beyond what I have listed above) that any of them were him.
