I am searching for any information on my 7 * great grandfather, William Balfour, son of Alexander Balfour and father of my 6 * great grandmother, Isobel Balfour. William was a Burgess of Edinburgh, a title he inherited by right of his father, Alexander on 30 July, 1735. This information was found on the rolls of Burgesses of Edinburgh but my connection beyond him is uncertain. The source of this info states William's father (Alexander), inherited the title of Burgess by right of his wife Margarett Cockburne, which would lead one to beleive that she is William's mother (if this is the case, I can trace my ancestors back to my 12 * great grandfather on Margaret's side, Thomas Beg). I am now doubtful of this being the case however as records I have found through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints genealogy website have revealed a William Balfour, christened 12 Jan, 1707 (a very possible date, given the date of his inheritance of the title of Burgess, and the date of birth of his descendants) at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland (the same place where the descendants of the William Balfour I am looking for were christened) with a father named Alexander Balfour and a mother named Jean Porteous (not Margaret Cockburn as expected). It seems a bit to much of a coincidance to be the wrong person but nevertheless, I am searching for confirmation. If you know anything about a William Balfour that fits this description, I would be very grateful for every peice of information concerning him and his ancestors you can give me.
Thankyou for your help.
