Gabriel Petersson Cock, b 1663 PA , d. DE (?) 11. Peter Larsson Cock/Kock, b 1610 Sweden, d 1687, Cock's Island, PA When I started researching my Cox line about five years ago, I believed we were Scotch-Irish. My grandfather Roy Cox, also an amateur genealogist, was certain that his Cox line was Scotch-Irish. However, as I delved into the records, building on the information that my grandfather had already collected, I became more and more convinced that we were descended from Peter Larsson Cock, a Swede or Finn who was deported from Sweden to New Sweden on the Delaware in 1641. Recently I convinced a male Cox cousin of mine to join the Cox DNA Study and have his DNA tested. I knew that his DNA would show whether or not his Cox or Cock ancestor came from Scandinavia. Sure enough, his DNA indicates that he belongs to Haplogroup "N", which is the major haplogroup of Finland. In 1610, Finland was a part of Sweden. His DNA has confirmed to my satisfaction that we are descendants of Peter Larsson Kock. DNA studies work very successfully on straight line Cox male descendants, so their DNA is a precious commodity. The DNA test is painless and only requires swabbing the inside of the cheek with a special toothbrush. The lab mails a kit to the participant and then the participant mails the kit back to them. The kit is assigned a number and the name of the participant is never published, thereby assuring privacy and confidentiality. If either of you have a male cousin who is a Cox, please try to convince them to join the project so that we can confirm that we are cousins. Here is a link to the Cox DNA website in case you would like to take a look at the results thus far: www.familytreedna.com/public/Cox DNA Study. I can't tell you how excited I am about the possibilities of combining these new DNA surname studies with good old fashioned records research. Sincerely, Nancy Kiser Notify Administrator about this message?
