My oldest relative is Hay Cochrane, born in Scotland in 1817. Two of his brothers, Robert and John, and his four sisters, Janet Peebles, Jean McWhirter, Margaret McCormick, and Catherine, left Scotland about 1830 and emigrated to New Richmond, Quebec. John was a sea captain and sailed to Liverpool and Glasgow. Another brother, William, emigrated to Australia.

According to family lore my Cochranes were Highlanders, and staunch Presbyterians.

In Canada, Hay Cochrane married a woman from Maine named Margaret Harriman. They moved to Alpena, Michigan, in about 1887. Hay died there in 1892.

I believe that the rest of my Cochrane relatives still reside in the New Richmond area, but I not been able to check that (yet).

As you say, this is a needle in a haystack, but I hope this helps.

Thomas Cochrane
