Cochranes in Canada - after 1850

Family stories have it that some of my Northumberland Cochrane family went to Canada (some followed the gold rushes to Australia). Unfortunately I dont have much more information - the likely candidates were Henry James Cochrane b 1821 with wife Elizabeth, or Thomas b 1817, or possibly Percival. Then there is Alice Tully Cochrane who married in 1848 - don't know her married name yet, waiting for the certificate. They were all in Northumberland in 1851 but not in 1881. Any suggestions as to how to find this needle in a haystack?
