My grandfather, Francis John Cochrane, was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 1904. His father's name, as reported on his birth certificate, was Alfred, and nationality was simply listed as "European". My grandfather went to Australia probably in the 20s or 30s, where he worked as an officer on merchant ships. He was killed in World War II, when my father, Alexander Oswald Baillie Cochrane, was just 5. As a result, I have no other information about my grandfather. I know that my grandfather had a brother, who also moved to Australia at a young age, yet that's about all I know. All attempts to trace Alfred Cochrane in South Africa (death certificates, for example) have been futile. Can anyone help?
