I don't think this is the same Hugh Cochran, but for what it's worth, my mother wrote a family history. She mentions a Hugh Cochrane as follows:

"Hugh Cochrane was believed to be the patriarch of the family. Newspaper clippings indicate that he came to Westfield New York after the War of 1812. Hugh had 3 children, John A, Rachel and Robert. An obituary clipping indicated that he had a daughter Rachel who married John Gracey in 1850. She was born April 7, 1821 in Westfield N.Y. They had 4 children, one of whom died at a young age. The other three were Clara Fox of Panama, John Gracey and Mrs G.B. Howe of Westfield. Efforts were made by letters to the N.Y. and Westfield Historical Societies as well as to persons by name of Gracey in Westfield N.Y. There was no record of any of those forbears.

"John A. Cochrane was born on April 7, 1820 in Westfield, New York; he died March 11, 1892 in Marshalltown Iowa. He was married to Permelila Goodrich who was born in Chautaque County, New York. They had one child Burt Cochrane who was a Marshall in Marshalltown Iowa and later at Detroit Lakes. He and Nellie Garkow had no children."

I am very interested in tracking down any more information about these relatives.
