Hi Mary,
Needed to pull up some of my notes before I got back with you. According to my records this is what I have:
Alabama Certified Death Certificate has her full name as Bettie E Cochran and her date of birth as May 5, 1855 with birthplace listed as Ala.
She died January 28, 1931 from Influenza and place of burial was Crumley Chapel Cemetery, Jefferson County. She was the widow of James Alexander Cochran and she was living at 3307 Ave. D, Ensley, Ala. at the time of her death.
Her father was Samuel Strickland and her mother has 2 names listed:1. Mollie Dry (this name is marked thru)
2. Betty Leatherwood
(this name is written above Mollie Dry)
The informant who gave the above information on Death Certificate was R.C. Cochran and his residence was listed also as 3307 Ave. D, Ensley, Ala.
I do not know when James Alexander Cochran died but he is listed Birmingham City Directory as follows:
1906James A Cochran, clk, Cont Gin Co, bds, 900 1st Ave
1907James A Cochran (Leetie), foreman, 4430 2nd Ave North
1908James A Cochran, cond, 4430 2nd Ave North, Avondale
1909Bettie Cochran (wid Jas. A.) 209 3rd, Pratt City
1910Bettie Cochran (wid Jas. A.) 209 3rd, Pratt City
1911Bettie Cochran (wid Jas. A.) 209 3rd, Pratt City
1912Bettie Cochran (wid Jas. A.) 209 3rd, Pratt City
From the above it seems that he died between 1908 & 1909, so I sent in a search of those dates and recieved a Death Certificate for James Cochran who died April 22, 1909 but he was a black male. That was the only certificate that could be found with that name around those years.
James A Cochran and Betty married 10-15-1877 Lowndes Co., Ala. and I have them listed on census as follows:
1880Lowndes
James A Cochran24
Bettie21
Mattie1
Sam4 mo.
Shehan Williams19(he is a unknown laborer)
.........................................................
1900Jefferson
James A Cawthorne44Dec 1855married 22 yrs

Robert16Mar1883
L S15Jun1884
Edna10Jan1890
Mary8Jan1892
Devon5Nov1894
Herman1Jul1898
Not sure if Sam & Mattie, children listed 1880 Lowndes Ala. census are deceased or not but she has lost 5 children as of this census.L S and Edna are burried Crumley Chapel Cemetery in Jefferson Co., Ala.I am not sure if L S was Lonnie but he was a male born 6-24-1884 and he died 12-27-1900.Edna E was born 1-13-1890 and she died 4-14-1901.
Also burried there is Bettie's father Samuel Strickland, born 10-20-1828 and he died 10-26-1900.Also burried there is Mary S Dry Strickland, born 9-10-1848 and died 1-13-1904.She was Samuel Strickland's (father of Bettie) 2nd wife and stepmother
to Bettie. She is the one whose name is marked thru as mother on Bettie's death certificate.
.........................................................
1910 Jefferson Co Ala.
Agnes Bratton44single(do not know who this is)
Bettie Cothran53widowmother of 10 with 4 living
Devon16
In 1900 Jefferson Census Bettie had 12 children with 7 living. In this census she lists 10 children with 4 living.
1.Maude married J R Whittle 8-25-1901 and they are listed
1910Jefferson
2.Robert could be the one listed as son in law of Sarah
Kay 1900 Jefferson
3.L S died 12-27-1900
4.Edna died 4-14-1901
5.Mary married Houston Alex Tillery and they are listed
1910Jefferson
6.Devon is listed with his mother Bettie 1900 Jefferson
7.Herman is not found
So it looks like the 4 living children would be Maude, Robert, Mary and Devon. In my notes I have Devon as Devon Milton Cochran born 11-15-1893.According to his WWI Draft Registration, he is married with 2 children, and providing support for his mother (June 5, 1926).According to SSI, he died January 1967.The only Devon Cochran (or D M Cochran) I have found is
1920Jefferson
D M Cochran26

also listed as family next to Devon Cochran is:
1930 Jefferson
W A Cochran41

I'm not sure who this W A Cochran is but Lonnie listed with him could be the Lonnie you thought was L S Cochran. They could be relatives of our James Alexander Cochran but I have not researched that at this point.
