Dear Connie:
I can't tell you how exciting it is to have someone else researching this particular Cochran line. You mentioned the 1860 Census for Fannin Co., Georgia, Pieceville P.O.In the 1860 Census, Talitha, as you spelled it, was spelled Telitha, but I have found it spelled many other ways, too.My husband is the great grandson of the Joseph B. Cochran who was living with Telitha and her husband, Tilman P. Chastain.Elizabeth Cochran was a sister-in-law to Telitha.I have been searching for Elizabeth parents for many years, so I am very interested in finding Telitha, too!
I found Tilman B. Chastain and Talletha Cockran in the Gilmer Co., Georgia Marriage Book, married May 7, 1849 by a Wm. M. Mathis, Justice of the Peace.
In the 1850 Census, Gilmer Co., Georgia, it listed:
Tilmon ChastainAge - 23BP - Georgia
TelithaAge - 20BP - Georgia
MemoryAge - 1BP - Georgia
(Memory must have died before the 1860 Census as she is not listed then.)
In the AIS Georgia Census Index it lists:
1860Chastian, Tilman P.Fannin Co.GAPg. 1004Pieceville P.O.
1860Chastain, Francis M.Fannin Co.GAPg. 1005Pieceville P.O.
(This is a child of Tilman P. Chastain.)
1860Chastain, John B.Fannin Co.GAPg. 1002Pieceville P.O.

1860Cochran, DanielFannin Co.GAPg. 1045Pieceville P.O.
(This is a child of John P. Cochran.)
1860Cochran, ElizabethFannin Co.GAPg. 1005Pieceville P.O.
1860Cochran, John P.Fannin Co.GAPg. 1044Pieceville P.O.
The only ones of these that I have information on is Tilman and Telitha and the last one, John P. Cochran. This may be Telitha's brother. It is listed as follows:
John P. CochranAge - 37BP - Georgia
Maryann/MargarettAge - 34BP - Georgia
MaryAge - 14BP - Georgia
JaneAge - 12BP - Georgia
JacobAge - 10BP - Georgia
DanielAge - 8BP - Georgia
MarthaAge - 7BP - Georgia
JohnAge - 5BP - Georgia
MargarettAge - 2BP - Georgia
In the Fannin Co., Georgia Marriage Book it lists:
John P. CochranMary F. Buckner2/8/1880
At www.FamilySearch.org, if you look under Talitha Cochran it lists:
Tillman P. Chastainbd-1 Mar 1822bp-GAd-1897 Fannin Co., GAFather:Elijah ChastainMother:Catherine Carson
Talitha Matilda Cochranbd-1830bp-GA
Memory Chastainbd-Bef 1850d-Aft 1850
Sylvania Chastainbd-1855bp-Gilmer Co., GAd-Abt 1912
Francis Marion Chastainbd-Abt 1853bp-GAd-1892
Martha Sophronia Chastainbd-1852bp-GAd-Gilmer Co., GA
(Sylvania was Rhoda or Rhody Sylvania)
In the 1880 Census for Morgantown District, it lists:
Free, MarthaAge - 42WidowedBP-GAFBP-VAMBP-NC
(Those parental bp's don't match the findings on the 1860 census.)
Free, BenjaminAge - 18SonBP-GA
Free, Manilla G.Age - 9Dau.BP-GA
Chastain, RhodyAge - 47Sister BP-GAFBP-VAMBP-NCSingle
In the Fannin Co. Marriage Book it lists:
John FreeMartha M. Chastain4/17/1859
In a history of Georgia that a friend of mine gave me, it talked about a John Pinckney Cochran who was born December 21, 1821 in Hall Co., Georgia.By 1860 this family had moved to the Pierceville or Pieceville section of Georgia.May John had a brother and Telitha comes from that line.
My side of the story is a little different.Elizabeth Cochran along with Joseph and Alpha are listed in the 1860 Census as you saw them.Well in the 1870 Census they disappear. But in the 1880 Census for Fannin Co., it lists:
Phillips, Joseph H.HeadAge - 23BP-GAFBP-GAMBP-GA
Phillips, IdiaWifeAge - 19BP-GAFBP-SCMBP-ALA
Phillips, John A.SonAge - 1BP-GAFBP-GAMBP-GA
Cochran, ElizabethMotherAge - 45BP-GAFBP-SCMBP-SC
(Here Joseph and Elizabeth are listed together again.)
The story has been passed down that Elizabeth married a Cochran. She has Joseph. Her husband left for Tennessee.Perhaps his family lived there.Anyway, Elizabeth left Joseph in Georgia with James Fans Phillips and Nancy Jane Hanks sometime after the 1860 Census.(Nancy Jane could have no children and the story is told that she went around looking for children to take in.)While Elizabeth was with her husband in Tennessee the Civil War broke out and they were unable to get back.Apparently her husband died while she was in Tennessee. When she came back to Georgia to claim her son, the Phillips family had already adopted him.In the 1870 Census it lists:
Phillips, JamesAge - 46BP-NC
Phillips, JaneAge - 36BP-GA
Phillips, JosephAge - 13BP-GA
Carmel, O. MaryAge - 15BP-GA
(Mary was a domestic servant that Jane had taken in.)
I wonder if the Cochrans we are looking for are in Tennessee.Write soon.I'm anxious to see if you have more info than I do.Well, it's almost 2 a.m. and I had better get to sleep.
Linda
