I have always been told that the C, G & K were all mixed up in our name. You could be part of a much larger group. My husband's family spells their name GOUGHENOUR, but in the 1880 PA census his GGfather is spelled with a C but he is buried with G spelling. Many spell ours without the E.Food for thought.
