I am now convinced as to my theory of there being 2 David Cobbs in North Alabama in the early 1800's. My ancestor, Bryant's father, died June 27, 1839 at Cave Springs, Mad. Co., Alabama. Numerous sources cite same info., incl. Family Group Sheets prepared by Dennis Amos, Rock Hill, S.C., in 1978. Also, TVGS (Tennessee Valley Geneaological Society) Ancetor Charts # 4 and #5. I, too, have seen newspaper obituary re: death in Florence, AL in 1827. Surely they would not have printed a false obituary! There is also an entire county (Limestone County) between Madison and Lauderdale Counties of Alabama, so I do not think that the lines were changed that much. David Cobb was certainly a popular name in those days, as there are 3 listed in the DAR Centennial Index. One was an aide to George Washington, and much of his correspondence can be viewed through the Library of Congress web site. Perhaps he was your David Cobb - he was not, however, Bryant's father. Deed abstract book in Heritage Romm of Madison County library shows an "account of sale of slaves belonging to the Estate of David Cobb, Dec'd sold the 2nd day of December, 1839 . . ." This sale took place in Madison County, NOT Lauderdale. Also, I am most certain that they would not have waited 12 years to settle the estate and sell the slaves, as would be the case if this were the David that died in 1827. Deed abstracts (copy obtained from Heritage Room) also indicate that my David Cobb was alive after 1827. Note: David married Martha Bryant in 1788. Martha Cobb was the mother to Bryant, W.R.W., Stancil, and all of the other children of David Cobb of which I am aware. Martha was one of his heirs. She survived him for several years, so there does not appear to be any room for him to have married Catherine Bird. Leavie Bell posted to this forum on Feb. 7, 1999 notes that there had to be 2 Cobb families in the area during this timeframe. How else would Bryant's daughter Jerusha marry Azariah Cobb? They were probably cousins, or something, but definitely not siblings. My David's father was William Cobb. They came Alabama via Tenn. and N.C. Have heard they descended from Samual Cobbs of Amelia County, Va., but no proof so far. I think that the other David also from Virginia, but not necessarily via N.C. and Tenn. Please keep posting as this saga continues to unfold. It will be interesting to figure out all of the connections!
