Thanks Paul, That scratches out Samuel and Azubah. DNA tests have been both a boon and a vexation to genealogists. We are now able to put people in the right family, we just don't know how they got there. Two tests that came back as perfect matches for Taunton Cobb DNA, that of Ron and Dr.Robert Cobb. have proved this point. Both can trace their ancestry back to New York and from there it seems to stop. In the case of Robert, his earliest known ancester was an Ebenezer Cobb, possibly born in the 1760-80's time frame who settled in the Cortland, NY., area, as did some other Cobb's, which I believe were Taunton's. Robert's Ancestors stayed and from Ebenezer down can be documented. The others seemed to have moved on. More on this migration later. Ron's Ancestry appeared to have moved into ST. Lawrence Co.,NY., around the 1830's. Ron has taken his Ancestry back to John Newton Cobb b.1824,Maine. In the nearby town of Dekalb, there are other Cobb families listing their birthplaces as Maine; a John Cobb b.1793, Stone Mason, a Stephen Cobb b.1816, Stone Mason. It is quite possible that John is the father and John Newton and Stephen are sons. More of a stretch is that they are brothers. Added to the mix is a Nathaniel Cobb b.1789, in the nearby town of Oswegotchie, but he was listed as being born in New Hampshire. I wonder how he fits into the equation. I always felt NY was a swamp for genealogists because of their lack of public records until the 1880's, and used Ma's records as a bench mark to start a search. Woops! Now it seems that those Taunton ancestors that only had two or three children recorded may have had ten unrecorded. The name Newton would seem to be more common as a sur-name than a choice for a first or middle name, and given the back then common practice of honoring a wife or mother's family by naming a child with their sur-name as a first-middle name, John Newton's mother, grandmother may have been a Newton. So far research into the Newton Family is going as well as checks in the Cobb Family. Any suggestions? Cliff
