Descendants of Joseph (Sr.) E. Cobb

Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH (SR.) E.1 COBB1 was born 1772 in NJ.1, and died August 05, 1868 in Muskingum Co. ohio1. He married (1) ??1. He married (2) MARY "POLLY" PENROD1 October 15, 1826 in Muskingum Co. Ohio, daughter of JOHN PENROD and SARAH DAVIS.

Notes for JOSEPH (SR.) E. COBB:
"The first settler in Harrison township may not be certainly stated, but in 1798, a family named Bean, inhabited a large sycamore tree, that stood near the mouth of Back run. Other families came soon after, among whom were the Larrisons, Farleys, and Cobbs."

The 1830 census include a female 40-50 so this must be Mary. Notice though that a young female is listed in the 0-5 column along with the youngest male, probably George and two males 10-15 that weren't listed in the 1820 census. I am guessing they are James, Penrod and Elizabeth Bateman from Mary's prior marriage. The birth dates match the census for those children.

(Does not appear that Mary Cobb is listed with him. George is. There was a Mary Cobb in Washington in 1842 as stated above so perhaps they divorced or she was living with another family helping out and was missed by the enumerator.)
The 1840 census revisited does not show Mary and the record above lists her death in 1834 which would account for her not being in the census. Who the Mary Cobb is mentioned in the History of Muskingum is unknown and may just be a date error. It makes sense that they were in Washington at that time because that is where the Batemans were located.

So what does the census records tell us of Joseph. First he was here in 1820 when the first census (that survived) was taken. Tax records may place him in the county before that and if the History is correct, he was here shortly after 1800. The 1820 census lists him with 2 females over 45. I am guessing his first wife and either his mother or hers. They had 3 boys and 2 girls living with them. Joseph Jr., David, Josiah and Anna would be among them but there appears to be another girl unless one of the older boys was married at that time and David was married in 1814 and is not listed individually so his wife is probably the extra female. There is also a Lucinda Cobb listed in the marriages who married Joseph Roberts 7 Feb 1814.

As for the first wife, it appears she did come with them to Ohio. You would have to check the cemeteries in Newton and Blue Rock for her as they were living in both townships. Perhaps even Harrison. Doesn't appear to be any value to search Washington township cemeteries unless your looking for Mary who might be buried with her first husband. Joseph might be buried with his first wife but stones from the earliest periods did not hold up to well. There was not a very good source of Granite or Marble so early stones were made of whatever was available, some being sandstone which just did not last.

Given all this information, I would place these families coming originally from the area where Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are at their closest. There is a Joseph Cobb in Luzerne Co., PA in 1800 and 1810 but I doubt that is him as even though he is not there in 1820, the History of Muskingum says he was a very early settler and if that Joseph was in Luzerne in 1800 and 1810, how was Joseph and Isaiah born in New Jersey in 1802 and 1805?[My tree.FTW]

Book: THE BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF MUSKINGUM CO, OHIO, CHAPTER XXXVIII- WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP.

The Baptist church was formed from th eBaptist church in Salem township. May of the Washington Twp. members, finding it inconvenient to attend in Salem twp. in 1842, petitioned the Baptist church in Salem twp. for permission to organize a church in this township. The petition granted, and now association formed, the next year built and dedicated a church, under the pastorage of Rev. William Sedgwick. They soon organized a Sunday-school, which proved a great aid to the church. As the signers to the petition to the Salem church may be considered the founders of a new church, we give their names as follows: William H. Barstow, A. H. Woodruff Sr., Robert Combs, Amy Presgrave, James Miller, A. H. Woodruff Jr., Elga Combs, Mary Leach, Mary Cobb (Joseph's wife) Harriet Bateman (Mary's former sister in law) Elizabeth Mears (who married later to Penrod Bateman, son of John Bateman, Mary's 1st husband), Sarah Callihan, Willis Barstow, William Leach, Penrod Bateman (Mary's child), Elizabeth Bateman (Mary's child), John Bateman(Mary's child) Semote Menifee, Jacob Slack, Hosea Woodruff, Margaret Ferrell, Ami P. Hunter, Peter Mears, Samuel Barstow Jr., Martha Woodruff, George Barstow, Mary Bailant, Mary A. Michael, Mary Barstow, Elizabeth Zett, Ann Hickman, Mary J. Dunmead, William Mears( who married Elizabeth Bateman.), Mary Martin, Brittania Presgrave, George Presgrave.

More about the Church:

The Washington Baptist church was formed in 1842 when members of the Salem Baptist church in Salem township found it inconvenient to travel all that way to attend services. A number of the members from Washington township petitioned the Salem church for permission to organize a new church in Washngton township. The petition was granted and a year later a new church was built in the township. It was dedicated under the pastorage of Rev. William Sedgwick. Soon afterward a Sunday school class was formed. The original signers of the petition were considered the founders of the new church. They were as follows:

Death: 31 Aug 1873, Cutler, Carroll, Indiana

Mother: Sarah DAVIS (AFN: Z51R-XF)
Spouse: John BATEMAN (AFN: Z548-T5)
Marriage: , Somerset, Pennsylvania
Spouse: COBB (AFN: 1K47-0VX)

I checked out the 1870 census for Carroll Co., IN and indeed there is a Mary Bateman, 87, listed with John Bateman and wife Ann. They were found in Washington township, Muskingum Co., Ohio in 1860. This would prove she did not die in 1834 like the other database said and would support this being here in the petition for the Washington Baptist church. I have lots of relatives in Carroll Co and did a search for any Batemans or Cobb in the cemeteries there and didn't find any. John Bateman moved to Kokomo, Howard Co., IN by 1880. ( I feel when Mary Bateman left or divorced Joseph Cobb she went back to her Bateman name.)[My tree.FTW]

David seems to be the oldest of the boys. In 1840 he is listed in the 40-50 column. The only David Cobb I could find in 1850 is in Licking Co., OH and is listed as being born ca 1793. The wife is listed as Margaret which is common to us Peggy as a nickname. I'm guessing this is them but he is listed as being born in PA. Now it is possibly they were one of those families that lived on the border between PA and NJ and counting the number of times the family moved around just in Muskingum, it is very likely they did the same in the east. I am fairly certain this is them as living with the family is Peggy's father, Daniel Whitakar, 83 he being born in MD and Peggy/Margaret being born in VA.[My tree.FTW]

Generation No. 3

5. JOSEPH3 COBB (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH (SR.) E.1)3 was born 1844 in Muskingum Co.Ohio3. He married MARY E. HOOVER3 October 03, 1867 in Washington Co, Ohio, daughter of AARON HOOVER and DELILAH THORN/THORNE.

Notes for JOSEPH COBB:
Joseph Cobb lived in the new state of Ohio. Only years before he was born was Ohio considered part of the North West Territory and was still occupied by Indians. Joseph and all the early settlers in Ohio used whatever resources that Ohio gave them to live through those tough times. Joseph lived most of his life in Lawrence Co. Ohio. I have reason to believe he may have came from those Cobb's who settled in Kentucky and moved west into Ohio after the Indians were settled. When Ohio was first settled, Lawrence Co. was rich in natural resources such as iron, timber, coal, and salt. Later came natural gas and oil. By the beginning of the twentieth century, many of these had been depleted. Joseph was found more in Rome Twp. This town was close to Proctorville Ohio. This was also where the world famous Roma Apples first were farmed. There was an Augustus Cobb who first brought these into West Virginia and won 1st. place at the county fair with this apple. This Augustus Cobb lived in Ashton, WV. And is buried at Ashton, WV.

Joseph worked on a Farm to keep his family fed. Work was hard back then and it took a full days work then to finish what we would do in a half a day now. The early settlers were Dutch, Irish, German and Scotch from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Tennessee and Kentucky. They were farmers, furnace workers and miners. The earliest settlers were mostly Quakers and Presbyterians traveling with their church and together established many of the Ohio communities. After the Civil war when the state was very young these same Quakers and Presbyterians were sometimes considered (SQUATTERS) because they would have come into the North West Territory that was sought after for its vast flat fields and would build and then when the war was over the Government would give a soldier 200 acres and when the soldier would get to his land only to find someone else was livening there. The solder would have these Christian SQUATTERS removed from their land. This always would cause a problem or two.

Notes for THOMAS B. COBB:
NOTE: Thomas Cobb, son to Joseph Cobb Jr, who can also be found living with his wife Lucy next door to Joseph
and his family in Washington Co., OH in 1860, is found with Lucy in Makanda Twp., Jackson Co., IL in 1880 and Thomas' (51) household is brother George (39) which seems to be a mistake because his brother
would have been 27. Seeing that George was also enumerated elsewhere that year it was probably a second hand enumeration where he was not there and someone else supplied the information and were mistaken or the
enumerator may have just written it down wrong. Also in the household is their father Joseph (74), a widower and a nephew James (18).

In 1900 Thomas and Lucy are still in Jackson. Thomas seems to have died
before 1910 but his son Henry is found there until at least 1920. No
other Cobb is found in the county unless some of the girls married and
remained.[My tree.FTW]

Notes for ANDREW MARTIN COBB:

As you can see the census messed up on the ages some. And, like I said they used whichever name fit him at that moment. But, from this we know that his family came from Ohio and from this hint I found his father. The Andrew Cobb family lived most of his life in Cabell Co. WV. His Tombstone is high up on the hill at Fairfield Cemetery. There use to be a large Oak tree that stood over the grave. Now that stump still stands. I was told to look for the large Oak. If not for that I am sure I would never had looked where I did.

Andrew Martin Cobb served in WWI Registration Card 1917-1918 and that at the time he lived in Wayne County West Virginia

Andrew Martin Cobb served in WWII on his Registration card it states him a resident of West Virginia and 1942 the year.

Notes for HESTER (FANNY) WAUGH:
On the tombstone it states the date of death 1966. But, I found a death date for January 01, 1929. I also do not find her maiden name. I believe she is a Waugh but I am not sure of this. I do know she went by both names of Fanny and Hester. I believe that Fanny is a nic-name.

On the 1930 Census for Huntington, Cabell Co. WV there was a Rube C. Leadman who was 56 who lived in the household. At this same time Martin Andrew as 52 years old so I am sure this would not be her mother or father whichever. [My tree.FTW]

13. JOSEPH5 COBB (ANDREW MARTIN4, JOSEPH3, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH (SR.) E.1)3 was born 1914 in Cabell Co. WV3, and died 1968 in Mason, Co. WV3. He met (1) OMA GLADYS CHAPMAN3, daughter of ALBERT CHAPMAN and ELETHA STANLEY. He married (2) PHYLLIS MEADOWS3, daughter of MERVIN MEADOWS.

Notes for JOSEPH COBB:
Joseph was still married to Phyllis Meadows when Joseph L. was conceived. It is believed that the family knew but with both families living so close together it was never spoken of. Joe died when his Tractor over turned. Joseph L. told me that on the day of this accident the man had stopped by his home and gave his children candy. That was the first and last time he preceded to show acknowledgement of Joseph L. and his family. When I (Kathy Cobb) asked a family member about them knowing that Joseph L. being a stepbrother they told me that they had always heard it but never knew for sure if it were true. So, I would say that since Joseph was still married he never made this a fact. I've always heard... (You can not change the past, you can only work for a better future.)[My tree.FTW]

Notes for JOSEPH LEVERNE COBB:
Joes sister Jarvis told me (Kathy Cobb) that her and Joe would plant potatoes, which were just the potato skins with a few eyes. Sometimes they would get lucky and these would grow. Joe and Jarvis would spend hours hacking the weeds from around the ones that decided to grow. Jarvis said they worked until those potatoes were up about four or five inches and then Emsey let the pig get in to them and ate them all down. She said her and Joe were so mad at him. [My tree.FTW]
