Ed,
I have not seen your William Howell (Hamilton) Cobb as of yet, but will notify you should I uncover anything. Re: William Cobb that died in 1803 in Knox Co., the book, MORE LANDMARKS OF TENNESSEE HISTORY, in a chapter titled, "Rocky Mount: The Cobb-Massengill Home", says William built his home in 1769. It states that he settled there with "eighteen year old Pharaoh Cobb and others of the family." This would make it appear that Pharoah was, in fact, William's son.
On page 251, this book says, "Benjamin Cobb, William's father, also lived in the vicinity." My research indicates that this William was active in Washington County until 1795, when he relocated to Knox County.
I believe that this William and Benjamin are originally of the Isle of Wight. The above referenced book says that the Massengills, were from there - Henry Massengill, Sr. had married this William's sister, Mary Cobb, and settled very close to Rocky Mount, William's home.
As for all of this William's children, different sources have different things. However, more than one say that his children by his second wife were Pharaoh and Sally. Nowhere do I find David.
