Coates in Georgia
In 'Collections of the Georgia Historical Society' Volume II, page 135 I find John Coates signing as one of six trustees on a court document dated Savannah, Oct. 20, 1737.The document was in regards to Joseph Watson.
In the Georgia Historical Quarterly Volume 36, page 226: a partial list of cabinet makers who lived and worked in Savannah prior to 1820:
Coates, Jo. who died circa 1739 who was listed as a 'Turner'.
In the Georgia Historical Quarterly, Volume 35, page 210 and dated 1780:"Jacob Watson, Captain, James Coates, Lieut. in the 8th Company or the District of Wrightsboro Township from the Town downwards towards Augusta."
According to his will, James Coates had three daughters who married into the Watson family of Columbia County, GA.
