Sanders Coats brought his family to Arkansas in the winter of 1848/49 from Shelby County, Tennessee. In the 1850 census of Bradley County, Arkansas, Smith Township, 50-year-old Sanders appeared with his Virginia-born wife, Eliza (45). They listed seven children: Mary, 22; William, 20; Martha, 15; Harriet, 12; James, 9; Fanny Jane, 6; all born in Tennessee, and Andrew S. (3), born in Arkansas. This puts them in Arkansas by 1847.
Sanders had been born in North Carolina on June 4, 1801. His father was John Coats, Jr., of North Carolina birth, as was his grandfather, John Coats, Sr. Eliza was born in Virginia about 1805. There were recorded in the 1840 census of Fayette County, Tennessee (just east of Shelby Co.) with six children, so two or three were gone in 1850. Eliza died in 1856.
On July 2, 1860, Sanders filed a patent on 40 acres. He followed that up by filing on 80 more on October 1, then another 40 on April 1, 1861, for a total of 160. He presumably lived and worked there until he died in 1874.
