Fred

Regrettably, there is no single publication that lists the (British) grantees of Arms, their address and the blazon of the Arms. The Harleian Society published a 3 volume “Grantees of Arms” for England & Wales. This gives the name, address and the College of Arms reference for many grants of Arms. You have to look elsewhere to try to find the description of the Arms granted – Burke’s General Armory is one such source but cannot be taken as 100% reliable. It does contain many errors and some flights of fancy.

There are also two volumes of the “Scottish Ordinary” that lists the Arms granted/recorded by the Lyon Court between 1672 and 1973. There is very limited biographical detail – name and location.

Do you have any particular name(s) in mind? I have been working on a number of “One Name Armorial” (130+ todate) using a combination of sources to identify various grantees &/or their successors.

Regards

Stephen
