Katherine

If the beastie is actually a griffin then Papworth has a few possibilities;

Ermine on a chief Sable a griffin passant Argent – CHESTER, Bush Hall, co Hertford.
Ermine on a chief Sable a griffin passant Or – RICHMOND, Hendenham, Norfolk.
Ermine on a chief Sable a griffin passant Or armed Argent – CHESTER, Blabie, co Leicester.

I did a quick “google” came up with;

“Caldwell Brothers Limited, Manufacturing, Export, Heraldic & General Stationers”.

My initial thoughts are that Caldwell Bros. might be described as a Victorian “bucket shop” supplying Arms without any genealogical research. I will enquire of members of the Heraldry Society of Scotland to see if anyone has any knowledge of Caldwell Brothers in case I am doing them an injustice.

Yours aye

Stephen
