Coat of Arms Forum

Tobin,
I appreciate your criticism of my post, but I would ask you to consider more than a coat of arms as it does not tell the whol story only that of one person. I also would like to point out that I was upset by being told that I do not know where I am from as I am very proud of my Scottish heritage. It may not be in a Gunn's nature to be rude(as was unintended) but it is not in the clan's nature to back down either. I agree and I am hesistant as well to connect the long line of septs that were added after much research to the clan. Though I would remind you that at their peak the Gunn's were one of the most influential and proud clans in the north, who were just unfortunate to create more enemies than possible to contend with (which seems to be what I have done). It is true that all Gunns are descended from a Norse/Pictish cheifly line, I just refer to one of those, George, who had the 5 or 6 sons who gave rise to my and other lines like Henderson and Wilson. It was no protection by any standard, it was land split among brothers when the clan split into almost factions. Robinson is acknowledged as coming from Robert by multiple sources and also in the naming a knight in the 17th C who is interchangeable referred to as Robinson and Gunn. I first found this out from family documents reporting crossings and memories of his decendants; as well as a stake in the English treasury that my family was told they were owed for Charles I i think it was never having paid his scottish commander for miltary services. Also any robinson crest I have seen contains stags and not just any stag (Red Deer) which is native to Caithness largely and a different variety towards the south where Robertsons hail from (also notice other parts of the shield that are conserved between crests). Robertsons on the otherhand are from Clan Duncan. I did not make the connection to Gunn foolishly, I explored both even in the presence of what I have been told. This clan bears no mention and I did look of any such sept at any time to robinson. However if you go to the tartan authority in Edinburgh (a subsidary of the Lord Lyon who doesnt play around) it lists Robinson as being a part of Gunn alone. I do agree that larger clans were in the practice of providing protection as the Sutherlands did for Gunn for a time. I understand that Braemore is in Caithness as I've been there look at the busted crofts saw Maiden Pap and the vast amount of sheep that sit there now. Its actually not even Gunn land any longer since they sold it in the 1800s to pay off debts. I dont know if it was returned however. I cant make a comment on suffixes and you not seeing it. The combination of norse and pictish combinations can make it difficult to nail down. I have done a lot of work on it to make sure it was true. I dont know what to say about this besides I know it to be so. I do appreciate the reference to the book on the clan and I will be sure to pick it up. I will make this conjecture: not everything is written down perfectly as you well know since the clan system and its members were story tellers and not writers. I was only able to find my connection through obscure clues and stories passed down for generations through the family. This connection admittedly is tough to explain since most of it was lost to writing as from what I am told any rare papers that did exist were burned or erased during the Clearances and/or lost in the mass movements that accompanied my line. I only ask you to consider the possibility as with 20 years experience I do recognize you as an authority since mine experience is half of yours. I apologize for any rudeness you felt as I would hate to pay the clan any dishonour. I hope you can accept my lineage and our common link, but I sincerely thank you for holding me to task.
Regards,
Brandon
