It reads "Perry of Walter, Devonsh." (presumably Devonshire). As for the crown, could it possibly be a collar? Two of the illustrated plates just after illustration #2 (on plate 124) show what appears to be variations of a collar. I couldn't find any of the Perry family blazons referring to Plate 127.7 (the hind with a somewhat crown-line collar). As for your request, yes I can look up PERY, Earl of Limerick; in this work it's: "Limerick, Earl of (Pery), a hind's head erased ppr. (for Pery). Virtute non Astutia. 124.3" ppr. = proper, borne in the proper or natural colours. The motto in Latin translates as "by courage not by craft." So the Pery, Earl of Limerick crest seems very similar to the Perry of Walter family. As for the later, there was no listing for a Perry of Water, but the Walter might be the same family with just a spelling variation. I hope this helps. Jim Notify Administrator about this message?
