Let me confuse the matter with what little info I have.
The first Coates on American Soil was prabably Thomas Coates, b 1659. He was from Sproxton, Leicestershire, England and came over in about 1682.
The name Coates is ancient. it probably derives from DeCotes(no A)-a Norman name. It appeared as Coates as early as 1331.
In 1347, John DeCoates(with an A)held land in Leicestershire, Eng.
There is also a branch that goes back to Sir Archibald Coates in 1300.
In Scotland, one origin of the name is Coats(no E)
In 1661, there is a reference to an O Coates in Ireland.
There is a Coates Castle in Sussex England.
There are also several places in Scotland and England named Coates.(many people get there names from where they come from)
Another claim is "Cotes" or "over the Coasts"

My grandmother gathered lots of information and stories when she did her research, of course not all is true or reliable.

In short, the name Coates is Scottish and English
