Is any of the following familiar?
A Francis Coates was born about 1790 somewhere in Yorkshire County, England. There currently is no record of his birth or baptism. Francis married Ann Green in Giggleswick Parish on April 14,1817. Ann Green was born in 1792 somewhere in Clapham Parish. They had seven children before immigrating to Canada about 1827.
Francis and Ann Coates settled in Hamilton County, just north of Coburg and near Rice Lake (Ontario Canada). According to the census of 1829 their farm had 100 acres, with 12 under cultivation, and two oxen and a milk cow. Seemly a good start in a new land.
Their grandson Thomas Coates came west as a blacksmith with the Wolsley Expedition of 1870 sent to suppress the Riel Rebellion. Thomas was born at Peterboro, Ontario in 1850. He was apprenticed to a blacksmith at age ten. According to his granddaughter Elsie Billyard he "was most unhappy with it, but stuck it out" Thomas married Dorothy Mackay in Kildonan Church (Manitoba) on July 6,1872. Thomas's interest in the West was mainly as a small farmer, but he had a fully equipped blacksmith's shop complete with anvil, forge, hand-operated bellows etc.
Dorothy Mackay Coates was born in the Red River Colony on July 21,1844. Her father, Selkirk Thomas Douglas Mackay was born at the Painted Rock portage near Hayes River (SW of York Factory). On September 13,1815. A very short time after his parents, William Mackay and Barbara Sutherland Mackay, disembarked from the (ship) Prince of Wales on August 26,1815 at York Factory on the Hudsons Bay. There is some evidence that he was the first white child born to Selkirk's Settlers.
