Yes, it is supposed to mean: "of the cottage" in Old English.
My grandparents, Eliza and Harry Coates from Manchester, England, came to the U.S. around 1908 and settled in Passaic County, New Jersey. I would love to locate some distant relatives or ancestors in England. Is there any change we could be distantly related? My grandmother's brother's name is Austin Coates, he always lived in England.
