I have started researching my family history as my grandfather told of the story that his father or grandfather was a member of Coats Cotton and left a legacy in England. He changed his name to Coates when he came to Australia and did not record the change. I am looking for the missing link. The only records I have are that he was a John Coats born 6/11/1811, married a Mary Anne Skinner in Dorset England in 4/5/1838 and came to Tasmania.
